CCC 68

Community Counselor Certification is a training course developed and offered by the Southern California Counseling Center, an affordable counseling center that utilizes carefully chosen counselors to provide counseling to lower- and middle-income individuals, couples and families. Group counseling is also available.

CCC is a four-hour weekly training program that meets for six-months. The training includes a weekly process group with licensed therapists and skilled paraprofessionals. A faculty of professional therapists who assist the paraprofessional counselor in understanding the counseling relationship facilitates the learning sessions.  Communication skills, cultural issues and systemic injustice are discussed through inter-active dialogue. Topic related issues are also explored. CCC provides training, supervision and support for paraprofessional counselors who are already involved or are interested in helping intentionally excluded populations   and under-served communities.

CCC participants come from different agencies, schools and communities that have lived experiences and are interested in providing support with issues such as homelessness, HIV, drug treatment, schools, gang prevention, violence and trauma. Each participant is valued for the wealth of experience, both personal and professional; they can bring to the program. The interaction and support of the group creates a safe place for participants to express frustrations, ask questions, seek comfort or just talk about a difficult issue they are facing.

The process group goes a step further in that it allows the participant to talk about issues not discussed at the learning session. The groups are smaller and tend to be more intimate. Past participants have expressed that they look forward to the CCC sessions to receive support and compassion. It is the Center’s part in capacity building of much needed services throughout Los Angeles City & County.
