SCCC is a member of CAPIC.

PARAPROFESSIONAL COUNSELORS

SCCC was founded on the belief that carefully selected individuals could be trained to participate in healing relationships. Therefore, all of our counselors, whether seeking professional license or coming to the Center as a paraprofessional, receive the same intense training.

There is a 16-month commitment for paraprofessionals. We offer the following training opportunities:

  • Basic clinical training course
  • Group and individual supervision
  • Family Therapy Training Program
  • Group leadership training
  • Specialized training in working with family violence
  • One-way mirror supervision
  • Best Practice Parenting training
  • Gang Awareness training
  • Non-time limited counseling work with individuals, couples, families, junior/senior high school students, and groups
  • Diverse client population with broad range of presenting issues
  • Monthly Saturday morning workshops

Life Experience Counts!
Paraprofessional counselors are selected for their empathy, life and personal therapy experiences, natural curiosity and their interest in working with clients. Many of our counselors come to the Center as paraprofessionals but become so enamored of the work that they go on to become licensed therapists. We provide a collegial community for paraprofessionals and students alike. The Center provides personal and professional support through retreats, in-house training, and supervision.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

Before making a commitment to join our community, we want you to be aware of the application process and the requirements and expectations that the Center has for its counselors.

Because SCCC deals with the most personal and sensitive areas of clients' lives, we believe it is important for us to also get to know you in a personal way. In addition, we want you to learn about us. So, as the first step in the application process, we invite you to attend a tour of the Center, which is held at noon on the first and third Wednesday of each month.

Application Process for MFT's, Paraprofessionals and Predoctoral Students:

The remainder of the application process is as follows:

  • Initial Interview - At the tour, you will be given an application packet. Shortly after you return the completed application, you will receive a phone call to set up a date for an initial interview.
  • Evaluation Group - You will participate in exercises that will help us understand your knowledge of yourself, your empathic responses, self-awareness of defenses and biases, ability to be open, willingness to learn, and your style of giving and receiving feedback in a group setting. All SCCC counselors participate in group supervision so we believe that it is important for you as well as for us to get a sense of how this type of group interaction will be for you.

SCCC is a unique organization that offers a broad range of counseling experiences, cutting-edge training, high-quality supervision from a variety of disciplines, and a supportive community of counselors and administrators.

This atmosphere of community service makes the Center a very exciting and creative place that can add a new dimension to your life, personally and professionally.

We look forward to meeting you!

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS

CCC
COMMUNITY COUNSELOR CERTIFICATION

CCC is a four-hour weekly training program that meets for six-months. The training includes a weekly process group with licensed therapists and skilled paraprofessionals. The learning sessions are facilitated by a faculty of professional therapists who assist the paraprofessional counselor in understanding the counseling relationship. Boundary issues and communication skills are explored through role-play and inter-active dialogue. Topic related issues are also explored. CCC provides training, supervision and support for paraprofessional counselors who are already involved, or are interested in helping the high-risk population and under-served communities.

CCC participants come from different agencies that deal with issues such as homelessness, HIV, drug treatment, schools, gang prevention, violence and other forms of rehabilitation. Each participant is valued for the wealth of experience, both personal and professional, that they bring to the program. The interaction and support of the group creates a safe place for participants to express frustrations, ask questions, seek comfort or just talk about a difficult issue they are facing.

The process group goes a step further in that it allows the paraprofessional counselor to talk about issues not discussed at the learning session. The groups are smaller and tend to be more intimate. Past participants have expressed that they look forward to the CCC sessions to receive support and direction. It is the Center’s part in capacity building of much needed services throughout Los Angeles City & County.

GANG AWARENESS TRAINING: A THERAPEUTIC EDUCATION

Through this program you will become more aware of gang culture and understand how it is a reflection of our own system of oppression and punishment. If we better understand the philosophy and dynamics of the gang, we can then realistically develop a strategy that will take into consideration that violence is an outward expression of hurt, pain and fear.
